Deep SOLO
The Deep SOLO
In response to an increasing need for temperature and salinity in the deep ocean, IDG developed the Deep Sounding Oceanographic Lagrangian Observer (Deep SOLO) float to be incorporated in. Deep SOLO floats have a life of over 200 cycles and can dive down to 6000 m. The Deep Argo array currently counts with over 150 floats, where 93 are Deep SOLO.
Deep SOLO geometry
Deep SOLO floats are housed in glass spheres rather than the aluminum cylinders that are used for SOLO-II. Glass spheres have been used for decades in deep ocean applications because of their excellent performance under extreme pressure. The orange hard-hat protects the relatively brittle glass.
